File a professional tax return
Follow these steps to file a PT return:
1. Fill in the PT form applicable to your state.
2. First, download the PT form.
3. After downloading the form, double-click it to open it.
4. Fill in the necessary details, such as the PT registration number, location, period and income tax amount.
5. After you fill in the necessary details, the form automatically calculates the professional tax amount. Deposit this amount with the government by challan or make an e-payment.
6. After payment, fill in the challan details at the end of the form.
7. After filling in all the information, click Press to Validate to validate the form. This generates an XML file.
8. Go to the State VAT site, log in and upload the XML file. After the upload, an acknowledgement number is generated automatically.
9. Take a printout of the acknowledgement number for your records.
Guidance on filing a professional tax return
1. Fields marked in red are mandatory; fill in the remaining columns only if applicable.
2. The first point is the professional tax R.C. number. In this column, enter the PTRC no. as given in the certificate.
Navigate: To find the PTRC no. online, go to the State VAT site → Dealer Service → Know Your TIN, and fill in details such as the dealer name, PAN or TIN no. It shows your PTRC no. There is also a checkbox "whether first return" in this column: select YES if it is the first return and NO if it is not.
3. Second point – State VAT no.: If the dealer holds a State VAT no., enter that TIN no. here. There is a checkbox "whether first return or not"; select YES or NO as per the tax return.
4. Third point – Name of the dealer: You cannot enter the name in this column because it is locked. When you enter the PTRC
in the first column, the "Name of dealer" is filled in automatically.
5. Fourth point – Address of dealer: This works the same way as the name of the dealer. There are two checkboxes in this column:
a. The first checkbox is "location of professional tax officer having jurisdiction over". Select the proper jurisdiction as mentioned in the certificate.
b. The second checkbox is "type of return". Select whether the return is original or revised. Also fill in the email ID and telephone no. of the dealer.
6. Fifth point – Periodicity of return: Select whether the return is monthly or annual.
7. Sixth point – Period covered by return: Enter the period, for example 1.3.24 to 28.2.25.
8. Seventh point – Computation of professional tax: Enter the number of employees in the appropriate rows.
9. Eighth point – Total tax payable is calculated automatically.
10. If there is an unpaid amount from previous periods, enter that amount in the "Ninth column".
11. Tenth point – In this column, enter the Interest amount.
12. Eleventh point – Enter the penalty amount.
13. Twelfth point – If the return is filed after the due date, you have to pay late fees. Enter them in this column.
14. Thirteenth point – If any excess amount was paid in the previous period, enter it in this column.
15. Fourteenth point – After you fill in the above columns, the net payable amount is calculated automatically in the fourteenth column. Note: A payable amount shows a positive value and a refundable amount shows a negative value.
16. Fifteenth point – This column is generated automatically. It shows the total tax paid in this return period.
17. Sixteenth point – This automatically shows the balance amount payable or refundable.
18. Seventeenth point – Fill in the details of the amount already paid by challan for PT.
19. At the end, fill in general details such as the date of filing the return, name of the authorized person, place, designation and email ID.
Then click the Press to Validate option. If the form is error-free, it generates an XML file. If there are errors, it shows them. Correct all the errors and then click Press to Validate again.
